Georgia Southern student representing USA Team at World University Games

When 19-year-old Georgia Southern student and archer Adam Heidt arrives in Naples, Italy, this July, he'll be competing against some of the top collegiate athletes in the world as he works toward his goal of one day competing at the Olympics. Heidt, a Springfield, Georgia, native, will join other college athletes at the summer World University Games (WUG) to represent USA Team in the individual, team and mixed team archery competitions.

Georgia Southern sport management students compete in case study competition

Georgia Southern University seniors and sport management majors Gabriel Anderson, Stacie Anderson and Jenna Kniss, were selected by faculty to represent Georgia Southern at the 2019 Applied Sport Management Association (ASMA) Conference Case Study Competition in February. The conference, held in Nashville, Tennessee, tasked students with finding a location for the next Major League Soccer expansion team, writing a report about their recommendations and presenting their findings to a panel of experts in the soccer industry. Georgia Southern came in second of the seven undergraduate teams. In addition to the competition, students were able to visit with alumni, CJ Berthelsen ('15), Zack Taylor ('11) and Michael Schetzel ('94), who are currently employed with the Nashville Sounds, Nashville Predators and Nashville Soccer Club respectively, and meet with other leading industry professionals.

Georgia Southern school psychology students sweep awards at state conference

Three psychology graduate students in Georgia Southern University's College of Education (COE) claimed all student awards during the 48th annual Georgia Association of School Psychologists (GASP) fall conference, held on Jekyll Island in October. Ed.S. School Psychology program candidates Jessica Martin, Shanice Murphy and Courtney Smith received recognition for their strong academic performances as well as dedicated service in GASP or the school psychology field. In addition, Martin and Murphy both received the GASP's Christine Daley School Psychologist Student Scholarship. Given to students majoring in school psychology in a Georgia program, the $1,000 scholarship is awarded to two graduate students annually. Recipients of the award were selected based on academic success in their graduate program, leadership experience, strong recommendations from professors and a desire to contribute to the school psychology field in the state of Georgia.

Georgia Southern University students receive four Emmy nominations

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has recognized Georgia Southern University's Multimedia Development Center (MDC) with four Student Emmy Award nominations. The MDC student production teams received two nominations for Sports - Live Events, Fairfield vs. Georgia Southern in Men's Baseball and Georgia State vs. Georgia Southern in Women's Basketball. Also, student Holden Galatas received a nomination in the Talent category for his anchor work of these events. "I'm so excited to have received this honor, I never really thought this would be occurring in this stage of my career. This has been a team effort since we started. If I win this, it is a trophy for the team not just for me," said Galatas. Students Shelby Head, Bradon Holder, Jayden Moss, Sterling Mattison and Robert Ross received a nomination for Arts and Entertainment/Cultural Affairs for the production of the "Strings at Southern Chamber Music Festival." "The experience working at the MDC has provided me with an unsurpassed professional experience in the broadcast and video production field. I have been presented with numerous opportunities to grow and really augment my major of Electrical Engineering with this educational experience. I can't thank Georgia Southern enough for this opportunity," said Holder. Moss also received a nomination in the Arts and Entertainment/Cultural Affairs category and has been hired to produce videos for Disney Theme Parks upon graduating from Georgia Southern. "Thank you Georgia Southern, it's because of the experience at the MDC that I was able to be hired in my job at Disney and then be nominated for this award," said Moss. The student Emmy winners will be announced in Atlanta on June 9. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, NATAS, is a professional organization for individuals in the television and broadcasting industry. NATAS is the standard-bearer for excellence in the television broadcasting industry and the gatekeepers of the prestigious regional EMMY Awards.The Southeast Chapter represents the most experienced and talented television professionals from all disciplines of the industry and from each of our television markets (Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Asheville, N.C.). The MDC, a division of University Advancement and External Affairs, provides students with training and hands-on experience that they can then translate into real-world opportunities. Students run cameras, direct, produce and manage more than one-hundred live events each year including ESPN3 and nationally televised broadcasts.

BFSDoArt undergraduate and graduate graphic design students recently participated in the regional American Advertising Awards (ADDYs) presented by the American Advertising Federation of Augusta. The students received two Gold and one Silver Award this year.

Georgia Southern Model Arab League earns top awards at Florida Regional Model Arab League competition

The Georgia Southern University Model Arab League (MAL) received two top awards in its inaugural appearnat at the Florida Regional Model Arab League (FRMAL) at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, Feb. 8-9. MAL is a simulation event that allows students to represent diplmats from 22 Arab countries that are members of the Arab League. Established in 1983, MAL is the National Council on U.S.-Arab Realsions' flagship student leadership development program.

Georgia Southern University exercise science majors Kali Todd and Regan Thomas in the Department of Health Sciences and Kinesiology presented at Harvard University's National Collegiate Research Conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Todd and Thomas, who are both University Honors Program students, completed their research under the guidance of Professor of Kinesiology Daniel Czech, Ph.D., in the Waters College of Health Professions.

Lelyn Stewart named 70th Miss Georgia Southern

Lelyn Stewart was crowned Miss Georgia Southern University at the 70th annual pageant hosted by the University Programming Board (UPB) on Saturday, Feb. 3. Stewart took home the title of Miss Georgia Southern after her tap dance performance to The Temptations' "Can't Get Next to You", for which she was also named Best Talent. In addition, she also earned the title of Best Evening Wear. The Alpha Delta Pi representative and Swainsboro, Georgia, native will now go on to represent the University at the Miss Georgia Pageant in June.

Georgia Southern University's Eagle Battalion Ranger Challenge team placed second overall at the 6th Brigade Army ROTC Ranger Challenge competition held at Camp Blanding, Florida on Jan. 21-22. Georgia Southern finished first in both the weapons assembly and night land navigation.

GS Model Arab League earns awards at Appalachian Model Arab League

The Georgia Southern Model Arab League received three awards in their first-ever appearance at the Appalachia Regional Model Arab League (ARMAL) at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia on Nov. 4-6. The delegation, made up of 11 GS students and their faculty advisor, Jacek Lubecki, Ph.D., represented the United Arab Emirates in the competition.

Georgia Southern Army ROTC earns first place in state Ranger Challenge

The Georgia Southern University Army ROTC Eagle Battalion program earned first place in the Task Force Georgia Ranger Challenge Competition on Oct. 21. Seven college Army ROTC programs across the state competed in the Ranger Challenge in Fort Gordon, Georgia, including teams from Augusta University, Columbus State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University and University of Georgia.

A team of Georgia Southern students received first place for the 2017 Student Challenge, a business case competition for National Retail Federation (NRF) Student Association members to demonstrate their creativity and business acumen to retail executives, sponsored by KPMG. The finalists attended the NRF Foundation GALA in New York City, where the top team was announced Jan. 15.

Georgia Southern students compete at Night of Spectacles

Georgia Southern Fashion Merchandising and Apparel students took home first and second place at the ninth annual Night of Spectacles on April 2 in Atlanta for creating unique fashions from recycled eyewear. The fashion show benefits the Georgia Lions Lighthouse foundation and challenges designers to create high fashion looks embellished with and inspired by broken eyewear collected through the Lighthouse's recycling program.

Georgia Southern University's Southern Orientation, Advisement and Registration (SOAR) Team recently traveled to Greenville, North Carolina, to attend the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW) where they won several awards. SROW is a regional conference through the Association for Orientation, Transition and Retention in Higher Education (NODA) attended by undergraduate orientation leaders, graduate students and orientation professionals.

University's Model UN delegation garners attention at national conference

Georgia Southern's Model UN delegation returned from the National Model United Nations (NMUN) Conference, the largest Model UN conference in the world, with an Outstanding Delegation Award. Georgia Southern was also recognized for Outstanding Position Paper Writing for the 14th time in 15 years. The team competed against more than 200 schools from around the world, and more than 3,600 hundred delegates.

Three College of Business students representing the GATA Sales Team traveled to New Orleans during spring break, March 17-20, to compete at the American Marketing Association's 38th Annual International Collegiate Conference. Chareva Myles competed in the AMA Perfect Pitch competition sponsored by AeroTek, while Taylor Porter and Jakeia Kitchens competed in the ABC Supply Co. International Sales Competition.
