Georgia Southern nursing students receive 2018 Abbie Lorene DeLoach Memorial Scholarships

Georgia Southern University nursing students Jayda Anderson, Kelli Shiver, Taylor Wallace received 2018 Abbie Lorene DeLoach Memorial Nursing/Kappa Delta Scholarships during the second annual Abbie DeLoach Foundation Scholarship Luncheon held in April. A total of nine students were awarded scholarships totaling more than $175,000 in memory of Abbie DeLoach, one of five Georgia Southern nursing students tragically killed in a car accident in April 2015. "Criteria exemplifying Abbie's compassion, commitment to the community and competitive spirit are utilized each year when selecting recipients," reads a statement from the Abbie DeLoach Foundation. Abbie DeLoach Foundation officers include her father and president, Jimmy DeLoach, her sister and vice president Anna DeLoach and her uncle and Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach, who serves as treasurer.

BFSDoArt celebrates scholarship and award recipients

Donors, faculty, staff, students and friends of the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoArt) gathered Friday, March 30, to honor the Statesboro Campus undergraduate and graduate scholarship and award recipients for the 2018-19 academic year. During a ceremony at the Georgia Southern University Center for Art & Theatre in Statesboro, these students were recognized for their outstanding achievements, hard work and dedication. The students will have the opportunity to share their work in the department's annual Ovation exhibition in the fall. William Green, an athletic training major in Georgia Southern University's Department of Health Sciences and Kinesiology, was awarded the Lewis A. Yocum Memorial Baseball Medicine Conference Scholarship by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society.

Abby Hey places second in National Tau Sigma Scholarship Competition

Georgia Southern University student Abigail Hey, an English major from Stem, North Carolina, has received a $4,000 scholarship from the Tau Sigma National Honor Society. Hey placed second out of more than 90 applicants representing chapters from across the nation. The scholarship committee evaluated applicants based on their involvement in and service to the chapter, university, community and individual academic achievement. As an academic honor society for transfer students, Tau Sigma National Honor Society promotes academic excellence, requiring students to maintain a minimum academic average of a 3.5, while staying engaged on campus and in the chapter.

Melissa Stack receives grant for athletic performance research

Melissa Stack (`15), graduate student in the School of Health and Kinesiology, has been awarded a grant in the amount of $844.06 from the Graduate Student Professional Development Fund (GSPDF) at Georgia Southern University for her research, "The effect of chronic L-carnitine and carbohydrate supplementation on body composition, perceived exertion and athletic performance in female endurance athletes."

Four Georgia Southern University Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art Students recently were awarded scholarships totaling $11,800 from the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation. The scholarship recipients are Alexis Barber, Heidi McClain, Macie Giordano and Hilary Luna.

Beth Jenkins receives scholarship for work at Georgia Southern with Your Skin Is In college ambassador program

Beth Jenkins, a student in Georgia Southern University's Department of Communication Arts, was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Melanoma Foundation of New England (MFNE) for participating in the Your Skin Is In college ambassador program. Jenkins' scholarship was one of six scholarships awarded to college students across the United States for participating in the Your Skin Is In college ambassador program, which is in its first year.

Georgia Southern student Candace Moon wins $6,000 Phi Eta Sigma scholarship

Candace Moon, a junior biology major at Georgia Southern University, is one of only 36 national winners of a $6,000 undergraduate scholarship from Phi Eta Sigma, the national first-year honor society. The scholarship funds will help Moon in her senior year at Georgia Southern, where she is studying in the pre-dental professional program, after which she hopes to attend dental school and pursue a career as an orthodontist.

Georgia Southern University Names 2009-2010 McNair Scholars

Nine outstanding Georgia Southern University students have been selected to participate in the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Program). These newly named McNair Scholars will participate in the Summer Research Institute beginning this May. "Georgia Southern University has a history of attracting the best and brightest students; these nine students whose major's range from physics to accounting are no exception," said Carolyn Boles, assistant director of the McNair Program. The Summer Research Institute operates from May to July. Selected students are involved in scholarly research under the supervision of a faculty member in their major. Students are chosen based on their academic performance and interest in pursuing graduate education. Incentives include a stipend, for students who elect to participate. "These students have the curiosity, passion and dedication required to become leading researchers, educators, and visionaries in their chosen disciplines. I am excited to see what the future holds," said Boles. The following students from your area have been named 2009-2010 McNair Scholars:
